Welcome, Instagram friends!

I appreciate you taking the time to learn a little bit more about Dirtie Dog Photography.

I would love for you to read through all the things on this page (including visiting any of the links provided that you find interesting), and then if you’d like to shoot me a message telling me a bit more about yourself and the animals you love, I would LOVE to hear from you. You can send me an email, or get in touch through Instagram. I’d love to know one story of how you came to love animals. Was it a specific animal from a time in your life? Was it an animal character from a book or a film? Whatever your story, I want to hear it. Thank you for being here, and I can’t wait to connect with you soon!

Owner of Dirtie Dog Photography

I’m Marika, the owner, photographer, and well, all of the things that have to do with Dirtie Dog Photography, I’m the one doing them. I love every bit of it. Working with people who love animals is the best job I can ever imagine. I get to learn so many wonderful stories that stay with me forever. It is an honor to get to help my clients tell their pets’ stories through photographs, and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t wake up and thank The Universe for giving me the ability to do the work that I do.

I’ve gathered some of my favorite blog posts here for you to check out. If you like reading about animals and looking at beautiful portraits of animals, then you’ll be right at home.
A love you never grow out of.

A love you never grow out of.

I was three years old when I fell in love with horses. My parents like to tell the story of how they knew it was serious when I exclaimed,  “Never in my whole life, have I ever had a pony!”

Why a studio session might be perfect for your dog or cat.

Why a studio session might be perfect for your dog or cat.

I realize that with the rise of Instagram, images of dogs out hiking  in incredible landscapes are super popular. I totally get it. I love capturing those moments, but if you are not the hiking type (or even if you are), studio portraits are just as amazing.

Thank you for loving your old dog.

Thank you for loving your old dog.

I love old dogs. I love everything about them. The good, the bad, the smelly. All of it. Give me an old dog to photograph, and I will leave part of my heart with them in their portrait. They will look at me with their soulful eyes, and I will be changed; transformed from every moment that came before our eyes met.

There is beauty in Sadness.

There is beauty in Sadness.

My experience of grief after the death of my dog.

I’ve danced with sadness for most of my life. What I mean by that, is that for as long as I can remember, I’ve felt sadness waiting for me to embrace it. I’m not entirely sure that that is a bad thing, I just know that it took a long time to understand it.

Your yard does not have to be pretty to be beautiful.

Your yard does not have to be pretty to be beautiful.

Sometimes people don’t believe me when I tell them that we can create incredible portraits of their pets without having to leave their backyard. Believe me when I say this,

Your yard does not have to be pretty to be beautiful.

It’s about your pet, it’s about the light and it’s about having someone who understands how to capture those things together.

To dream of the wild.

To dream of the wild.

This is the moment when I knew my life would never be the same. I let go of the idea that I would become a person who wondered later in life if they should have followed their heart. I would no longer be that person who was too full of fear to chase after their wildest dreams.
